Crested gecko incubation periods.
|
|
Thanks in advance for any answers! I'm a beginner crested gecko breeder, and we're waiting on our fourth clutch to hatch! They are incubating at 72 degrees F, humidity of 75-80% continually, and their 75-day-mark was on January the first. They have not hatched yet! Has anyone else had a set of eggs incubate for longer than the 75 days?? If so, how much longer? Am I just freaking out!? (YES) hahaha. There was still some movement when I candled them, but I'm trying to keep candling to a minimum.

yeah, relax :P
I had a clutch go 103 days and I've heard of even longer. out of my 4 clutches last year, most were ~90 days but it was highly variable. longer incubation can mean better structure, better differentiation of the sticky patch on the tail, and a bigger hatchling. too long is bad so cooling them would be foolish, but just be patient.
are you candling them? in the last week or two they're quite visible in the egg (I found it easy to differeniate heads and tails by about 70 days) and that last week + they barely move as they're running out of room.

JB's Crested Gecko is a good website, and she's made several youtube videos of candling at different times during incubation.

oh, and I candle mine all the damn time and everyone's hatched fine :P I use a mini maglight, so the bulb isn't super high intensity or anything, and doesn't appear to damage anything. I candle them IN the substrate so I'm not pulling them out all the time and there's no risk of dropping.

At 72*F I'd expect the eggs to go over 90 days at least. I'm incubating at 70-72*F and all my eggs have been hitting 101-104 days. Crested geckos that hatch earlier than 70-80 days often times are undersized and have other problems. Let nature take its course, you've got them at a good range of temps and humidity and they are clearly thriving in the shell if you're seeing movement. Don't worry if they stop moving towards the very end of incubation, they usually cease obvious movement a few days to a week before hatching, and some pull a "hug the bottom of the egg so it appears the egg is clear and empty" for a little while before hatching, too(can you tell I candle a lot? LOL). I have an egg at day 98 and 67 and both are right on track. :)

Hah! Thanks so much everyone!! I check out JB's cresties A LOT! I LOVE HER!!!! :) I couldn't find any varying information on the internet about longer incubation periods. I LOVE THIS SITE! So helpful. They are hanging out at the bottom of the eggs already, just seeing little tails flicking around in there. Again; thanks! :)

Sounds like things are going really well to me. Longer (cooler) incubations tend to produce more developed hatchlings with much better structure, so that's a bonus.

Have you noticed a good bit of swelling in the eggs (almost a circle in shape) as well as stretch marks? Thats when my eggs were pretty close to the point of hatching.

Yes, they are beginning to swell, which is why I thought they would be hatching soon. Only one is really swollen, the second one is not nearly as swollen, but still visible stretch marks. :)
