Q: Whatever happened to Chinese Leopard Geckos?
Posted By:

So I saw "Chinese Leopard Geckos" a number of years ago at the cleveland show, and I thought they were super-sexy, more elegant, longer arms and darker, just generally (to me) neater looking animals.

Why have they not caught on?

Anyone here working with them?

I am not positive, but I have a feeling that most people aren't working with them because they might not have the variety of morphs that lopard geckos do. But I looked up there care and it is relatively easy, the only hard part is a higher humidity. But they need low temperature. So the lack of morphs is my guess.

I'm pretty sure I saw some on a wholesale ist recently. Imports were a little pricey when I first started seeing them coming in ($250-$300), but the prices quickly dropped. I have seen them plenty of times for under $20 from wholesalers. I know a few people have had success with them, because I've seen US CBB babies for sale before. I think they are cool too. They are not difficult to keep, but they aren't quite as hardy as leo gex. As has already been said, they like it cool and moist. I know at least one species is a cave dweller.      -p-

I seem to recall seeing them pretty often at shows in FL. As Chinese Cave geckos

I know a breeder in Oregon who has some beautiful babies she hatched(Lunar Gecko here on iHerp). I'd love to get one some day, they're from a cooler region and are quite striking little critters. C:

Those are so freakin cool! I've never seen them at a show before. I think we should all get together and make them popular!

I'm not sure why they haven't caught on, they are awesome looking little critters.  I checked out a care sheet and they don't seem to be hard to care for or breed.  If anyone is interested here's the care sheet:

When you see em in person, it's like a leopard gecko, but the arms REALLY stand out.. the photos don't do justice to how similar, yet wildly different they are. It just really surprises me that you don't see these all over, morphs or not... they're so beautiful

A buddy of mine works with them, not sure if he's on here but he had a CB group for sale a while back.

Aaron, I know a few people who keep/have kept cave geckos locally, and of many across the country. I think they're definitely a bit of a niche gecko.

I agree with how pretty they are, though, and how photos (even good ones) don't do them justice at all.

Actually the Chinese Cave Gecko is Goniurosaurus luii and the Hainan Leopard Gecko is Goniurosaurus hainanensis.

Now, the Vietnamese Leopard Gecko (Goniurosaurus araneus) looks awesome! heh

I recently purchased a WC male (G. haianensis) at the Cleveland show and I'm looking for a female. I think part of the reason they're not as popular is that they are extremely shy.  Even allowing that my little dude is WC, I only see him after lights out. (Which works for me since I work a late shift.) But from what I've read up, all the cave gecko species are delicate and shy. They require quiet, high humidity and lots of hides.

I would love to work with these animals. I'm not the biggest fan of Leopard Geckos, and I tried to get into them but I guess they just didn't captivate me enough. I think this is what my brain was telling me to hold out for. Smile
