Q:
|
How often to feed Savannah monitor?
|
|
Jody (my 7 month old sav) is a very enthusiastic feeder. he will eat whenever there is food around. I've been feeding him about 3-4 adult mice twice a week. SO that's about 6-8 mice a week. He seems to be doing extremely well on this diet. He's growing at a super fast rate. He's a little over 18 inches i'd say. What and how often do you guys feed your monitors?

Holy bujeezus!! Osiris would be stoked to live with you!... They will eat whatever and whenever you will let them! Osiris is always "starving"..lol. He will give me the look and paw (yes, paw.. he is a rescue and missing most of his front fingers) the glass.... No matter how recently he ate.
Everyone feeds different... Especially Savs, I've found. I feed two mice a week, an egg, some turkey... crickets every day... 10-15 large. More insects, less meat... for as long as you can. I'm sure you have read how easily they become obese, and the health implications associated with that. The higher insect ratio will prevent that...
Jody is gorgeous, btw :)

Thanks, yea I try to watch Jody's weight. She gets a lot of time out of her cage for exercise. But before i changed her to diet to mostly rodents, i had a ard time feeding her anything other than mice. I tried chicken, turkey, crickets (she would give me the craziest look as if crickets were just so beneath her standards lol). She would only eat a little bit and then stop eating.
How old is Osiris?

Roaches are good.. better than crickets (I've been told)...
Osiris was a rescue.. I was told he was 2-ish years old. But, I really do not know... Over a year, for sure.. because I know he was sitting in that teeny tiny tank at the "rescue" for at least 6 months (I saw him there that long).. and she had him like a year or so. He is about 19" now.. he has grown a sh*t ton in the last month!! I do not know the exact measurement for "a sh*t ton".

And... they are smart and completely manipulative. If you let them run you, they will. If she's hungry, she'll eat bugs. :) Osiris tried that with me, too. Now, every time I walk in the room he jumps up (literally, on two legs) thinkin' he's gettin' crickets 10 times a day!

I know about the Q&A section :). I was just interested to see how other owners feed their savs. Because almost every other owner i've talked to feed their monitor differently. Especially when it comes to portions lol

Ok just wanted to make sure since you are new (and both your blogs seemed to be asking a question) and I've noticed some miss it and end up asking all the questions that would be great to have in the Answers area in blogs. Nothing wrong with blogging a question, just don't forget about the Answers area

holy cow, is she growing like a weed? I feed my juvie sav a little somethin-somethin' every day (or he gets VERY ornery) - - Shannin's right, gotta be all about those insects, and dubia are great! I feed my dude Peanut a bunch of crickets and dubia every day, and maybe once or twice a week, a rat pinky and a piece of hard-boiled egg as a snack. Also, like it's already been pointed out, they're SUPER prone to obesity, but when they're growing, feed 'em what they want (within reason). Just know when to cut off the endless supply of snackies! I told Shannin a while back that a good indicator of a stopping point would be when they start growing faster in circumference than length ;-) - isn't feeding them SO much fun though? I love it!

My sav is about 7 months old and is 27 inches now. He's grown an inch a week basically.
I feed rodents (mice, asf, rats, dwarf hamsters, all f/t and about once a week and/or when a snake refuses a meal) I will be adding newborn rabbits if my snakes wont eat them.
Shrimp head on raw also once a week, usually 3-4 large shrimp
Quail eggs Raptor would eat several dozen if i let him lol! Usually 4-8 a week(1-2x a week)
Slugs, snails, earthworms(his fav), crickets, hornworms are tossed in every other day. I noticed about 5-6 slugs in there this morning so I hope they start to breed. I know the crickets lay their eggs in the dirt and at times I see them in there too.
I hope to find someone to buy cheep day old chicks off. I would like to get him eating those too and maybe some of the snakes as well as a treat.

Osiris is 21" (I had a second pair of hands assist with measuring his squirmy lil self today).. and must be younger. He was also kept in a 30 gal tank prior to my having him.... In the last 5 weeks, he has grown 6"!! And, I don't do any crazy feeding with him 1-2 small mice a week.. crickets daily. An occasional egg. Simple. Growing, shedding, pooping.

There may be more info regarding rodents and monitors but no matter what, a good varied diet is a key to good health. The older the animal the fewer and smaller the feedings. I feed babies daily in small amounts and then gradually work to three or four times a week depending on how much it eats during a feeding. Appropriate sized rodents, chicken organs, ground turkey, fresh fish (not canned) boiled eggs and high quality CAT food (monitors are not omnivores like dogs) are all good options. When not feeding whole prey I dust with Mineral powder. I also offer all of my lizards chunks of cuttle bone for them to supplement naturally.
