Q: Good Deal on a GTP?

There's a local pet store in my area that I know takes good care of their herps (I worked there back when I was 16 for a short time) and I was picking up some live feeders yesterday and chatting with the guys there and they told me about this Chondro they have.  I took a look and it's a little red baby and they have the paper work from the breeder (who apparently is local) and it's out of a lime green parent and a blue parent.  If I rememeber right it was a Jayapura x .... well I can't remember the other parent.

Anyway they were asking $550, is that a reasonable price?

Is this a new reptile only pet shop in Frederick Maryland?

IMO, based only on the information presented, it is a fair price, but I would not consider it a "good deal".

almost $600 for a GTP of random lineage, that a breeder wholesaled to a petstore?

I've seen such snakes for under $300.  I wouldn't pay that much.

BuddyB, no it's Rick's Fish and Pet, been there at least 20 years, I forget off hand when they opened, I just rememeber going in there as a little kid with my dad.  Now if there's one that opened that I don't know about please let me know!

When I get my taxes back I might see if it's still there, who bred it and get more details.  Maybe the breeder would have babies for a bit cheaper.  I'm still new to Chondro genetics so I don't really know what makes some babies worth $300 and others were $1000+.

Fair price for a private breeder .. but not for a pet shop animal  You can get a great animal from a real breeder  on here for the same price  and you have less worries as to origin of the animal

All the more reason to pass on this animal.  I stand behind my statement that it is a fair price, but I will also tell you that I would never pay a fair price for a pet store snake when there are so many reputable breeders selling animals for less.  Buddy B. and John Leckie just ot name a couple within meeting distance.  Regardless of your opinion on the quality of this pet store, it is still a pet store and you don't know what it has been exposed to.

Sounds "fair". But if your going to get bit by the chondro bug get one from an iHerper.

This is true, once I get my taxes back I'll talk to Buddy and some of the other folks on here and see what's available then.  Thanks guys!!

I agree with Mike! if you're going to drop several hundred on a GTP, get a good one from a respected breeder. there's generally a reason an animal ends up in a pet store...
