Doug Dix at deer fern farms is the best, I highly recommend his care sheet and you can also e-mail him with specific questions. I have dealt with him at shows and he is great.

I believe Deer Fern recommends millet as a substrate.  Maybe I got that somewhere else.  Either way, I vote "no" on millet, prevents them from getting decent traction for moving about, like they're swimming.  Since they recommend it in part as a safety issue (i.e. it is digestible) I have used it in the feeding area of some enclosures, but in the end it's a weird, unnatural substrate which requires you to provide a separate burrowing box or something of that sort.  I much prefer the sandy soil substrate I've been using more recently.

In response to millet...I use it for my uros and my beardies and don't have any "traction" issues. I wonder if perhaps it may have been to deep? The other part I love about millet is that it sifts so easily, makes cage cleaning a snap. I have seen impaction issues with every sort of substrate except millet (and paper of course) so I vote yahoo for millet. I use rock formations as hides so I don't have the need for burrowing boxes either.
