Q: How does one determine the value of an animal?

Hey all,

So, how does one determine value on an animal?

I ask because my wife has decided she is not quite as in love with her carpet as she thought she was/would be. Too energetic for her tastes.

So she wants to get something different (she has a specific animal in mind and to make life easier I am going to try and see if I can get a partial or full trade for it.) However, I have never done a trade before and I am just a hobby keeper not a breeder so I have no idea what it is that determines value for an animal.

I do not currently know the sex on this carpet but I have an appt. with the vet to get that checked. '07 animal but do not have an exact DOB. It is 90cm in length and masses 269g. Aggressive F/T rat eater. I have full feed and shed records.

This is the animal when we bought it last fall:

The day after a shed:

And how it looks as of last night (8/12):

So, what are everyones thoughts on how much this animal is worth?

Thanks for all input.

Cheers

I would simply check other sites/shows/breeders and see what the current average value of that particular species is.

Been doing that. Have yet to find any '07 animals and '08 can go for anything between $50 and $300. Kind of a braod range and seems a bit subjective so I was hoping to narrow it down a little....

I will keep at that angle though

It is a very interesting looking jugle type carpet.I would seek info at Moreliapythons.com,you will find many serious carpet python enthusiasts.Personally as a morelia collector,I would value that animal at $150-175,slightly more if it is female. What type of carpet was it bought as,and who sold/produced it?These are all questions who's answers will affect the animals value. It even slightly resembles a jaguar carpet, though I doubt that it is.

Hey Jamey,

Thanks for the referral to the forum, I'll ask around there some.

Do not have any real good info other than what I put up. My wife made the purchase without me and met me at the door on the way out carrying the little beast. So no clue on who the breeder was or what "type" it is. In fact your suggestion of a jungle type has been the only really committed answer anyone has given me as to a possible type, though a coule other have said it may be a jag sib (definitely not a jag, does not have the silver eyes.)

Since it was a local expo (Atlanta GA) I am guessing it was just one of the local breeders who produced it since there were no "big" vendors there. Other than that though I can not really say.

Does your wife remember the vendor she got it from?I have an animal I got from LLLreptile that looks very similar.

I had to sell my male jungle carpet python last year at a show. I was asking for $120 (the price I paid for him), but the best price people were willing to pay was $80. You might be able to get more money or ,as was my case, more people that are willing to trade rather than buy. Most carpet python breeders did not want to buy mine because he was not ready to breed.

Nice carpet !!! that is a very clean/ reduced patterned animal. I would seriously check out Moreliapythons.com and get some opinions on that little one. I have been out of the carpet python world for 2 years but I have a hunch that little one is well above average.

@ Jamey,

LLL was not there, I do know that.

@ Supreme and NC,

THanks you both for the suggestions/comments

I would guess he/she is probably a jag sib. Whether it was a jungle jag or an IJ jag is hard to say. Either way, he's a nice looking snake! Definitely one that I'd love to have in my collection, especially if it was a female.

As others have said, the price is subjective. He's worth nothing until someone is willing to give you money for him. I would also recommend checking out MoreliaPythons.com. It's possible that there is someone there who would be happy to trade you for what your wife wants. What are you looking to trade for?

Hey Dalvers,

My wife is preferentially looking for an albino ball but she said she was open to hearing other offers since we were not sure what the "actual" value on this animal would be.

Not much closer along in that regard either LOL. From posting here and on a couple other forums (thanks again guys for the suggestion of moreliapython) I now have a range starting at $100 and running up to a possible $1000 (though that top end is a doubtful). At least I can say now that I am not the only one who finds it a unique looking animal :) Good to know my tastes are not totally off.

Cheers

It does have a nice reduced look. The head pattern screams jag,but it is not a jag, quite possibly as Dalver stated some type of jag sib.Without any background info on it,it will be imposssible to tell what ssp. or type of ssp x that it actually is.To me this will decrease it's value somewhat as I prefer not to work with x's.If it were an actual jungle and not a x,it would be worth considerably more due to its 50/50 type reduced pattern,as jungles like that are much sought after. As Dalver stated,it is worth what someone will pay for it.To the right person I would say anywhere between $150-$350 depending on sex.Hope we wereof some help.

Personally I vote you hold on to the little guy. Carpets are spectacular pets and commonly tame down with age. I don't mean to step on toes and down on any species but to many balls are on the boring side. You have a very clean animal and one you'll enjoy watching change over time. In several years this guy will be worth more than you'd think. You bought a pet, just learn to love it. Kinda like a kid. it's a pita some times but all in all sticking with your choices is part of life. just my 0.02 cents.

Like anything it's supply and demand. The less their are and the more it is wanted brings up the price. You can have a snake there is very few of but unless others want it too it wont be worth anything. And at the same time you can have a snake there are many of, but if the demand is high the price can be too.  When trying to set a price as others have said, just check out other sites and see what they are asking for them.

Hey man, despite what others are saying I will say again:
That is a jaguar carpet python. I didn't realize you purchased it in Atlanta, hell, I may have produced it....I am going to go back and look at head patterns....

Jag....jag....jag....jag....jag....I say again...jag....

i think ben is right, i think it's not worth as much as some jags because of the lack of background info. if breeder can be found, it would be worth 500 or more. i still think someones gonna buy that JAGUAR from you and you will regret it. if i had the money, it would be me :)

Chris, Ben, all,

I am becoming more and more convinced this is not a Jag. I have been picture gazing since last Thursday and there are traits I am picking up on. I know people say that there is no 100% accurate description for Jags but my animal has against hits than for hits in my opinion.

I also spent 4 hours last night trying to get it to bobble or show any indication of neuro issues and got nothing out of it except my glasses pulled from my head and bent out of shape while being constricted around my neck.

Anyways, short story long, I do not hink it is a Jag...

I personally think it looks a lot like a jag- definitely not one of the reduced pattern...  A spectacular looking sib if not.  But he's got the color and the head pattern for sure!
