What happened to my GTP?
|
|
Here is what happend... let me know if you guys know what happend ?
This month we just went thru a move, my boyfriend had moved my GTP to a new room in the basement, in his cage and everything.... he told me he hasen't eaten since we left the apartment ( a month ago ) we had gotten him from a reptile show from a wholesaler, seemed ok for the first little while, i seen him 2-3 weeks ago and he was lively and crazy as ever, i just was there on saturday night and he was looking funny, hanging off his stick with his head tilted and not moving.... my boyfriend picked him up and he didnt move, we have the correct heating and lighting and even a mister/fogger thingy in his cage, all temps were correct..... i woke up the next morning to check on him and i found him on the bottom of the cage dead......
Anyone know what could of happend ??? We took such good care of that little guy... i miss him soo much!!
everything was good, temps were good... he was happy go lucky 3 weeks ago when i saw him, and then BANG, out of no where he died...
could this be transfered to my other snakes ??? i cleaned his tank out really good and threw out everything... i just don't want any others to die on me
I belive the snake was Captive Bred, So the guy told us... One of our friends bought its brother or another GTP off the same guy and it grew to be twice its size and healthy.... when ours stayed small and didnt eat much
The Fogger i cleaned every day, or atleast took it out and cleaned it with HOT HOT Water and a good scrub...
I belive he was only a few months old, well to us he was.... 4-5 months
i didn't notice that he was breathing funny at all.... he looked normal to me & Healthy...

Well, along the lines of what Stephen said, but completely different, some of these animals simply die.
I've had animals at 3 and 4 months who were captive bred, by me, up and die for absolutely no reason. I have kind of a "loose" policy that I won't sell anything until it's six months old, to absorb the attrition rate.
Regardless, you may not have done anything wrong. Spraying for neonates is absolutely critical in my opinion. I have lost more neonates to dehydration than anything else.
The likelihood of it being a horrible disease that others in your collection will be exposed to is unlikely, but there. Whenever I have a death, I go into extreme lockdown/paranoia mode, and from that point on, everyone is treated like they are a disease carrier.. no sharing of food, hemos, 100% insane lockdown. I'd recommend that you keep an eye on everyone, and use best hygiene when dealing with your animals for a couple of months.
Sorry about your loss.

I agree with Aaron & Stephen. It is important to get GTPs from well known breeders not the wholesalers at the shows. They say the animals are captive bred and they are... in another country, then imported. The thing that concerns me is your fogger, IMO they are dangerous(burns and electrical shocks) to all animals that come into contact with them and they have been known to catch fire in the enclosure. You can test this by touching the fogger when its running, it is a very unpleasant feeling. One GTP keeper was awoken to the smell of smoke, her fogger was on fire in the tank. Foggers may also increase the incidence of RI by vaporizing water that is warmer (more Bacteria) due to the fogger running. Throw the fogger away. I too am sorry for your loss. Robin

Most likely it was from what we all call sudden death syndrome. It happens fairly often with imports (captive born fits into that category) and it can also happen, as Aaron pointed out, with CBB animals as well. There's still a lot we don't know about these critters. You did increase your risk of death when you got an import though and those animals usually need to be wormed several times to relieve them of excessive parasite loads. I also don't like foggers. I think they are a fire hazard and I like the idea that I have to spray my animals at least once a day. Allows me to check on them and assess their health. I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience with your first chondro. I'd suggest trying again with a CBB animal purchased from a reputable breeder. There are older animals available out there at reasonable prices. The only imported chondros I have are all over 3 years old, which often seems to be the critical age to survive.

Burmgirl, I noticed you mentioned temps, but never hmidity. What did you normally keep the humidity? Do you have a hygrometer? In Florida we have no basements, but what looks to be the defining key in your statement, is the once active snake was active no more once moved to the basement. Just to cover all bases, any open gas, chlorine, or other cleaning agents in the basement? What about a gas water heater that has a detached duct to vent out. The PPM in the air (Parts Per Million) of a natural gas or propane gas appliance might be so low to a human over 100 pounds, but DEADLY to an animal weighing just a few grams. I am an inspector secularly, so I share what I think might be deadly in many basements. Otherwise, parasites might have been the cause.

Humidity was always good, as i noticed it was always around 90-80 percent, we were in an apartment before, then moved to a house, my boyfriend had moved all the snakes to a room in the basement next to a bathroom, there were no open chemicals or anything around or near that room... He was fine up until i stated in my blog, that one night i had gone to check on him and he was acting funny, twisting and turning, hardly moving... i kept the lights on him and humidity/heat up during the night thinking that would improve him and he'd be better in the morning and maybe just had a cold or something, but in the morning i was wrong, he was stiff and dead on the bottom of his cage..... and i dont think the water heater would have anything to do with it, the vent in that room is blocked off... The GTP was well in that room for nearly a full month before anything, maybe longer and he was fine... Just when i had moved to the house after he'd had been there for a month... i just happend to be down in the room cleaning and seen him and we have the carbonmonoxicid detecter in the basement, So other then that i don't know what could have happend to him.. all my other snakes even my new ATB'S are fine and their smaller then our GTP.... Thanks for all the imput and suggestions on what it might have been, I'm still keeping a close eye on everyone just to make sure

Well, sorry to hear of the loss. Keep us posted. Do a google search on "safe ppm levels for carbon monoxide" Remember, if there is carbon monoxide, even though the levels are too small for a detector to beep, it can SLOWLY hurt an animal that just weighs ounces. Losing an animal is always a sad thing for us herpers, especially prized animals.
