What's Wrong With My Friends GTP ?
|
|
Hey Guys,
I'm posting this for a close friend of mine!
He just recently bought a Green Tree Python, It is Year & A Half Old & Recently its been keeping it's head up in the air? It also refused to eat its last meal which is making him worry.
Right now the humidity hasen't been high in the tank because we've been having some really warm days here, So the room stays fairly hot on its own.
He has it in a bin right now, with a heat pad underneath on high and he just spilled some water on the bottom to bring up the humidity.
I don't know the temps right now because he doesn't have anything to tell him what they are at the moment, So right now i'm trying to write as much as he is telling me to help him out with figureing out what's wrong with his Green Tree Python.
If anyone can give me some information to send back to him on how he can help his Green Tree Python, that would be great !
Thanks
**** I think it may be an RI or something.... but i'll let the experts answer this one! ****

I don't know. My JCP does that on occasion. She's never been sick, been to the vet, etc. I'm not much help but I sure hope it's not a nuero thing with him, cause that would suck. Keep me posted :) I'd like to know what he finds out or what happens

The first thing that your friend must do is spend twenty bucks on a thermometer with a probe. Most likely your friend is cooking his Green Tree Python from the info you have given. If the room has been hot and he has the under the tank heater on high I could only imagine that tub is like a sauna. Chondros will normally retreat to the ground when it gets to hot but in this case the ground is much hotter than the ambient. If the room is not air conditioned I would turn off the heat immediately. Chondros can take it being slightly cool but over exposure to excessive heat will certainly kill it. Over heating or a Respiratory Infection can also cause the snake to hold its head up like stargazing. Until you get the cage temps and room temps there isn't much that can be offered that will benefit the snake except, to take it to a qualified Herp Vet ASAP. I wish the best for your friends chondro and please keep us up to date on its progress. Good Luck!!!

If you guys can get something to measure the ambient air temps and the humidity, that would go a long way to actually figuring out what the snake is living in, in terms of it's conditions, and that way you could find out a lot more about whether this is a medical problem or just a husbandry problem. Radioshack usually sells some indoor/outdoor temp & humidity sensors; they are "indoor/outdoor" because they have two probes, and this could easily be used to monitor the cage conditions. Also a "temp gun" would be good to measure surface temperatures. I honestly hate to think how hot a heat pad left on high could be getting. A thermostat would of course be really good to have to control the heat source, but even with a thermostat, monitoring the temps & humidity is a MUST!!
If this is a medical issue, you'll still need to get the husbandry concerns ironed out before any treatment will be really helpful... but stargazing can be a vague symptom of some really scary stuff! I very much hope that you are seeing husbandry-based problems only, but you can't be sure right now with what you are seeing.
Good luck to you and your friend!!

I agree with both Charles and amarilrose - get a thermometer at the minimum. Find out what the temps are!
Get The Complete Chondro book by Greg Maxwell and read it. Your friend should have gotten all the necessary stuff first before getting a GTP. Good luck!

Charles & I must have been writing at the exact same time. Smart guy.
Good point too John, about the book, and the preparation!

Biggest problem I see is the Chondro isn't at MY house!!! JK!!
Seriously, if the house is good and warm and the weather has been very hot(where isn't it hot these days!). I'd go for simply unplugging the UTH and spraying down the tub good. I'd probably crack the lid to the tub for a bit too. Tubs usually hold humidity fairly well. If he doesn't seem to change his behavior within a few hours, then the dreaded RI would be the next suspect. If it's an RI bad enough to hold the head up, he should be able to hear the labored breathing. Tell him to hold the snakes head close to his hear and listen closely! If the signs are there, he should get it to the vet asap. Chondros can have a difficult time getting over RI's. And if that is the case, it's best to give the snake plenty of recovery time before trying to feed again. It's been shown that they can relapse if fed too soon.
I must say, I've never had one behave this way. If mine ever appear too hot, they tend to droop more than coil, but I have overhead heating. Maybe Chris will chime in, he does bins and UTH. Best of luck to him.

Greg Maxwell's book will tell you everything you need to know. I agree with the above posts, preparation is the key to success with GTPs I think your friend is in desperate need of proper equipment, otherwise this could potentially end up extremely disastrous for the Chondro!! That being said, find yourself a thermostat to control the heating, and proper gauges to monitor the tub.

I'd point at heat and humidity. It sounds like your friend really needs to get ahold on both! I hope the GTP gets back to normal soon.
Another thing I wanted to point out, is sometimes snakes with an RI will stretch their neck out with their head up or propped on something because it is hard to breathe. Low humidity can cause problems with the respiratory system so he may want to get him checked up on. Good luck!

Could be a respitory, you must have appropriate temps and humidity this is very important for a chondro.
