Because they are addictive...like potato chips.  You intend to have only one or two, and the next thing you know you've eaten the whole bag.  ;)

well snakes are like a drug once you try it you become addictied so buying a new snake is like a crackhead getting there fix well its like that for me anyway lol ;p

Chris, a red adult chondro would be my dream!

I have so many because they make me happy. Even though i only keep a few different species, each snake is its own snake. They all have their own personalities and that makes them special.

For Lisa and I, owning 17 (21 after the Daytona show this weekend...) snakes (or a dozen tarantulas, 8 geckos, etc...) isn't something we ever planned on, but rather something that just came naturally.  To reiterate what everyone has said, they are addictive.  You start out with one snake and are like "well, this snake is cool, but that other one has a totally different personality (or attitude or coloration or whatever)" and wind up getting another and another and another.  For us, we kind of like the less common varieties; we tell friends and people we have a Savu python and they're like "what is that?"  Or a tame Moluccan and they're like "no way.  I've never met a tame Moluccan."  I'm sure the same holds true for all the chondroheads and ball python fanatics out there, too.

I think Rob Zombie pretty much sums it up in the documentary "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey," when he says: "I'm not a casual person.  When I like something it's real.  It's not casual...  Like no one goes "yeah, I was really big into Slayer, one summer." Like, you know, I've never met that guy.  I've only met the guy who's got Slayer carved across his chest."  Snakes are like that.

*shakes head at THIS being the most important question...*

It's all HIS fault! He came over one day with these two cute little clown faced slithery worms and then took me to a reptile show. Sugar was my very first snake, then HE bought me Spicy for my birthday...and it snowballed from there.

I haven't even posted all of HIS animals (ok maybe a few) just almost all of mine, although if you ask him they are ours (cha ok you just keep telling your self that). He is a freakin facebook addict but won't come here and create a profile...whatever (huh Jackie)

Nearly every one of my animals has a name that arose from personality or characteristics. I do my best to spend an extra minute with the ones who seem to appreciate it. I have my favorites but every damn one of them is special.

I'd have to say things kind of snow ball. You like to experience things...see which you do and dont like...and well its kinda like kids...you cant just throw them to the curb they find a way into your heart and you care for them....but it doesnt mean that in the mean time if you have the time and space for something different you cant try that too. Everyone has a hobby something they focus on....spend their money on...and so on...mines my animals its kills my time makes me happy and I enjoy doing it...I love to learn about them and from them...and I know when I get a new opportunity I like to take it....I really enjoy talking about them to other people as well...and if I can educate some school children and sometimes parents on how they are misunderstood it really makes me happy! ...and I also love to hear other peoples stories, and knowledge and I CAN always learn something new. Some people cook, some draw, some collect bottle caps, other antiques, cars... you name it...there will always be a way for people to spend their money and if it makes them happy and they enjoy doing it all the power to them....besides were on iherp...common! YOUR TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE OBSESSED WITH REPTILES!

Every few months I rearrange my reptile room to squeeze more in.  I think I still have room for at least ten more before things get out of hand!  I have a varied collection and I'm trying to decide where to limit it.  So far, no Boas, although I love them.  I'm thinking about some sand boas though.  So far, no Milks or Kings, but I've always been tempted.  And I definitely plan to add some Pituophis of some kind, either Bulls or Black Pines!  But, before any of that I must have at least oner more JCP!  And, if I've learned one thing from iHerp, it's that I must avoid Chondros at all costs!  I have a very addictive nature and it seems that the Chondro addiction is a really strong one.  Every now and again I consider getting some, but so far I've thought better of it.

See.....that's how it works.  We are all a bunch of addicts.  But. snakes are really great part of our lives.  They do a lot more for us than cigarettes and alcohol (I think).

ok random thought here...most of this has focused on snakes (I know that was the question) but there are a few OTHER reptile addicts (like someone whose initials are KK...ahem) how many are just general reptile addicts...I mean I've got quite a few lizards myself and one lone froggy even. Come on....shout out

I just simply could not stop at one snake. Currently I have 9 snakes (with a few more that I have planned to purchase), 2 crested geckos (with a few more that I want) 3 beardie adults and 27 babies (got the beardies already bred and decided to hatch the babies) and the husband would also like gargoyle geckos. We just love our reptiles, and so do our children.

I have 1 and am looking for 1 other. With those 2, I won't have any more. I like snakes, but I don't want my house to be that full of tanks, and I hate rack systems.

It's an addiction! I love my snakes and I can't get enough of them. Same goes for my geckos, and I used to have over 100 rabbits at one time... So it just seems natural for me :)

I love my rack systems.  Easy to clean, doesn't take up much room, the snakes do well in them.  What's the problem?

I agree. Racks are great and are actually better for most snakes because of humidity, etc. They suck for display but are cool for everything else, lol.

I used to have a lot more snakes than what I have now, then I got married and started a family.  I guess that you can say that they are like drugs, they are addictive.  But I like them because they have their own personalities.  For instance my BP, Thon, calm girl until I leave on trips, she hisses at my wife and refuses to eat until I get home.  Bella, my IJ Jag, sweet temper lets my daughter hold her with not even trying to get away.  Jack, my ringed python, would rather take your hand than look at you.

I dont use all racks I build custom glass front cages and they are awesome. I dont have any pictures to post but I will try to get some up later in the day . They are 4 feet x 2 feet  in that space I divdie it up into 3 spaces  which winds up bineg bigger than your 32q tub (measured at the bottem)with a glass front  plus heat runs the length of the cage about six inches from the back.  If they are on one level you can run a row of 3 (9 single cages) on one helix control its the best ......also for my boas i just leave the 4x2 open and and install a 2 foot x 11 inch heat pad (with helix ) which supports 3 but I do use racks also fror babies and leopards and other. I also have about 1000 breeding rodents and all for my animals.

OMG, i tried the breeding thing, it failed mercilessly.  Im not sure if the mother ate the babies or if she never had them, but after about 2 months, i got sick of them and fed them off.  what would i need to build that kind of system?  (not the rack, but the comment above)

umm because theyre like a meth addiction, except that they dont make you paranoid and you have something to shoe for it when youre done spending the cash!

Because every time I see one I like...I have to get it!  Plus, they are cheaper than drugs in the long run and sometimes they even pay for themselves...

They  NEVER  pay for themselves.  Occasionally they make you enough money to BUY MORE!!

That's pretty much what I mean, but if I can make enough to pay for the initial investment price, then I'm doing good.

LOL, Meg, you're right, that is payment  :D

I'm a die-hard snake addict, and I grew up keeping turtles & colubrid snakes ...but geckos are adorable and I may have to try my hand at keeping them some day... like pretty much any Rhac's or Phelsuma geckos in existence, I want 'em!!   :D  That being said, the boids are my passion!!
