Q: Awful incident with duct tape........

Well, i wont go through how awful yesterday was, thats for my blog.  But when i came home yesterday from being over at my grandmothers for the weekend (since thursday) i checked on my snakes.  i didnt see the  male corn in the container, so i picked it up and a tail grabbed hold of me.  on the other side of the container, where i had strapped the lid down tight with clear boxing tape, the corn had his face and neck stuck on it.

i didnt panic, and grabbed some veggie oil and q tips and got him off in less than a minute.  hes missing some layers of scales,  but other wise is fine.

i got really lucky that he didnt die, because i dont know how long he was there like that.

i remember you all telling me not to use the sticky traps to catch the one i lost (which is still gone) and now im extremly glad i listened.

now, my  question is...

Has anyone else had a bad run in with tape or something similar to it and either lost, or had an injured herp from it?

I don't think tape is the best thing for securing enclosures.  For a lot of my corns I have regular screen tops with a nice collection of text books and bricks to weigh them down.  That seems to work well for me.

Ive never had any issues with tape, Ive even used Masking tape to pull off stuck eye caps once or twice.

I used electrical tape on the inside of an enclosure for something or another, and had a baby chondro get all wrapped up in it.  It was a quite a pain in the ass to take care of, but he came out seemingly ok, but very pissed off.  I'm not sure if it had anything to do with him falling over dead about 8 months later though....I couldn't find a reasonable cause for him to croak...so who knows.

Lost a baby crestie due to tape. It was a freak happening. I left a roll of packing tape on the ground that was kinda hanging off of a box. Gecko jumped got stuck and I was unable to remove him because he was only 1 gram. I had to put him to sleep because he was tearing his own skin off.

I got my milk snake for free because of tape!! :D lol She had gotten stuck on some tape at the back of the enclosure in the pet store and because she was "injured" they couldn't sell her so i got her free. She has a little skin tag now thats hangs down off her neck but it doesn't seem to cause and shed problems and she eats fine so it's not really a problem.

Reptiles and tape never mix well.

Thankfully I heard about this when I got started, and have never used tape on anything.

When I first got my snake, the thermometer gauge kept falling off the side of the tank. I didn't have anything else to stick it with, so I put it back onto the side of the tank with the same double-sided tape that it had come with. I walked into the room and she was wrapped around it, as it was about to fall off again. I grabbed her, and the gauge came off with her. I had to slowly peel it off her so that she wouldn't get hurt. She didn't seem angry or anything, but I immediately went out and bought some 3M double sided sticky... tape, stuff. That has kept the gauge in place since than.

I used duct tape to hold up some wiring for the lighting and some heat cables temporarily in an enclosure once. Duct tape fixes everything right? I've seen people using it to hold parts of their cars together LOL. Ok so I figure this wiring and tape isn't going anywhere. Well never under estimate what a wondering snake will do. Fortunately it was one of my bigger snakes. She decided she was going to rub this tape all down with her nose and get wrapped up in it. I came home from work to find my burm wrapped with the tape across her head, around the body and tangled in heat cable. Now try holding and untangling a powerful 12 ft snake still while removing duct tape off very slowly. Not an easy task. I got the tape off without injury to her (or me) which is probably because of her size but the glue residue stayed on and I couldn't get it cleaned off. I had to stare at this albino burm with dirty black marks all over her until her next shed. Things might have been worse if I had left for a weekend or longer period. I was lucky she didn't rip out the live wires.

Something I saw at a show last weekend:  A snake stuck on tape can be freed with Red Bull.  It immediately un-stuck the snake.  I'm not kidding.

A can of Red Bull would peel me out of bed.....  That's interesting. I wonder what ingredient in the drink would cause the tape to release.

I'm scared to know what ingredient in Red Bull does that,I have a baby Black Pastel BP that was in a temp cage that had some old duct tape over a crack on the back and long story short it was all entangled. I got most of the tape off fine but it snatched up by the neck and took a small chunk out of it:(. I've been treating it,which is looking much better, and its about to have a shed so hopefully all will be well once the sticky stuff comes off with the shed. Feel horrible I didn't even think of the tape on the back cause its been there so long and it was just an overnight enclosure, and its my 4 yr olds first snake:(.

thats almost as bad as koolaid dissolving tin foil...and I dont drink that either.

I had a ball python escape a bricked tank (before we had racks) so I stuck to lockdown lids either sliders with pins or clips on slip ons. I havnt had to tape anything inside an elclosure before so I havnt had that issue BUT I did rescue a ball with "tape scars" funny scaleless patches that looked more like burns...

I'm a firm believer that if you have to tape anything to the inside of your enclosure... light or heat probe cords, to spend the extra couple of bucks and get aluminum tape.  it is moisture resistant so it doesn't fall of from where it's stuck, and it's thin/strong enough that rubbing against it by snakes does not rub it off.  Of course, you've got to be damned sure whatever you're taping is where it's going to be forever before you do it! LOL

Thankfully I've not had any tape incidents

I did hear that the ingredients of Redbull are almost identical to a sterilized, synthesized version of Male Cow urine... hence the name "red BULL"

thats terrifying, koolaid dissolves tin foil?  i might have to rethink my drinking habbits.  sorry about those who died by tape, sometimes i think its an awful invention.  i wish reps were stick-proof.

I got a baby Chondro from Will Bird, I have it in a 10 gallon and the screen top would allow for the humidity needed. So quickly before work I duct taped saran wrap. Since It was temporary I did it really shitty because I was in a hurry. When I got home 2 days later the first thing I did was check on the chondro. Then I saw him, colpletley stuck from face to tail to piece of duct tape. This is a Chondro hatchling, a delicate little Chondro baby. I thought it was dead! Its jaw, eye , and whole body was stuck! I then saw it move. Initially I wished it was dead just to end the suffering, I never thought it would live without being really messed up. So then I just started running water on it and pouring olive oil on it. Lots of olive oil! I let the snake do all the work. I was scared to pull it at all(I know baby chondros are really delicate). About an hour later I had cut away most of the duct tape and only a dime size piece was left. It lived with that piece for about 2 days! Now it is better than ever "the duct tape incident" seemed to not even phase it. It ate the next day! You can now see its picture, its the maroon chondro.

It never had any injuries of missing scales! I think because I let it do all the work, which I believe only made it stronger.
