Q: Flying and reptile transport

Hello all,

I have a friend who needs to get his BP back from his girlfriend in Pennsylvania. He currently works in the Air Force, which is why he cannot keep him. I have a friend who is going to keep his BP for him while he is in service (in atlanta, GA), however, we cannot ship him due to the temps being too hot!

He is going to take leave in July and was wondering if he could bring the snake back with him on the plane as cargo. I have never shipped a snake via plane before so I wanted to ask you all if you had any knowledge/know-how on how to do this? Remember: he will be on the flight as well, if that makes a difference. What are his options?

Thanks in adavance!

+1 Sylvias, but if he insists on taking the snake on the plane, I would assume each airline has their own protocol for that sort of thing. He won't be allowed in the cabin, but possibly the cargo/luggage area like people do dogs and cats. I'd feel much better shipping it with a cold pack though IMO.

A while back I did quite a lot of research on the subject of "snakes on planes" as I had a pet I needed to get from California to Minnesota. From what I found, no airlines allowed snakes in the cabin (though many allowed birds and some small mammals, bah). I can't remember what the protocols were for checked animals, but I know I just ended up shipping mine.

Ok...shipping anything in weather that is over 95 degrees, even with a cool pack, is not safe. So that is not an option.

Sorry to sound so curt, but I have lost a snake that way before. Carrier delays do happen. I know there are risks always with shipping but this is an even greater one. Trust me if shipping were an option I would take it.

I think this is something that needs to be asked of the specific airline then...I'm sure each one has different rules and regulations.

Good idea! I will find out what airline he plans on using. :)

Most likely answer is this is not possible.

Most, if not all, major airlines only accept Cats and Dogs as checked or cabin animals. At least one allows rabbits and birds.

You'll likely have to wait for the weather to be decent and ship the animal. :/

Or, you can fly iHerp Air, coming in 2059.

If you can't ship.... There's really no way to do it, at least not that I have ever heard of.

pidak reptiles

this is an interesting topic, but i would ask a specific reptile shipper about heat and cooling.

I have to agree with Aaron.  For the Tinley show in February 2010, I looked into all of the airlines I could find online (since Katie flew out to visit).  ALL of them said NO checked reptiles, and NO reptiles in the cabin (carry on).

Shipping is your only option, unless you can find someone who would be willing to make the drive.

I mean that's until Aaron designs iHerp's teleporter network (you on that yet, oh codemonkey master?), which obviously takes precedence over any silly iHerp Air project... I mean I was wondering what would take iHerp Air so long to launch, then I thought about it....  LOL  this is definitely me staying up too late

Aaron, you are right! None of the airlines allow reptile transport. Thanks for all of you guys help on this. We will have to wait for cooler weather or he will have to drive with his BP.
